Intel RealSense is a technology division that specializes in depth-sensing and computer vision solutions, which have applications in robotics, augmented and virtual reality (AR & VR) respectively. The division was initially launched under Intel’s Perceptual Computing initiative in 2013 and rebranded as RealSense in 2014. Over the years, it has produced a range of products, including depth cameras and modules that allow machines to perceive depth and navigate environments.
On January 8, 2025, Intel announced its decision to spin off the RealSense division into a standalone company. The spinoff follows a challenging chapter for RealSense, which faced potential closure in 2021 as Intel shifted its strategic priorities. Though the division was retained, its product lineup was scaled back significantly. This latest move represents a pivotal shift, signaling renewed faith in RealSense’s potential within the robotics and computer vision sectors.
