Insider Weekends – Co-founder and Chairman of Platform Specialty Products Acquires $4.83 Million Worth of Stock

  • December 24, 2017

Welcome to edition 392 of Insider Weekends. Insider buying declined sharply last week with insiders purchasing $85.3 million of stock compared to $182.68 million in the week prior. Selling also decreased with insiders selling $1.37 billion of stock last week compared to $1.76 billion in the week prior.

Sell/Buy Ratio: The insider Sell/Buy ratio is calculated by dividing the total insider sales in a given week by total insider purchases that week. The adjusted ratio for last week went up to 16.03. In other words, insiders sold more than 16 times as much stock as they purchased. The Sell/Buy ratio this week compares unfavourably with the prior week, when the ratio stood at 9.62.

Note: As mentioned in the first post in this series, certain industries have their preferred metrics such as same store sales for retailers, funds from operations (FFO) for REITs and revenue per available room (RevPAR) for hotels that provide a better basis for comparison than simple valuation metrics. However metrics like Price/Earnings, Price/Sales and Enterprise Value/EBITDA included below should provide a good starting point for analyzing the majority of stocks.

While the company’s growth over the last three years has been impressive, the company continues to post losses, revenue growth has decelerated significantly over the last three quarters and the balance sheet is leveraged thanks to a number of acquisitions. On the positive side, due to high depreciation and low capex, free cash flow has been positive over the last three years and in three of the last four quarters.
