Insider Weekends – First Insider Purchase at Six Flags in Over Three Years

  • December 31, 2016

Happy New Year and welcome to edition 341 of Insider Weekends. Insider buying decreased last week with insiders buying $62.68 million of stock compared to $131.59 million in the week prior. Selling also declined sharply with insiders selling $331.08 million of stock last week compared to $731.32 million in the week prior.

Sell/Buy Ratio: The insider Sell/Buy ratio is calculated by dividing the total insider sales in a given week by total insider purchases that week. The adjusted ratio for last week dropped to 5.28. In other words, insiders sold more than 5 times as much stock as they purchased. The Sell/Buy ratio this week compares favorably with the prior week, when the ratio stood at 5.56. We are calculating an adjusted ratio by removing transactions by funds and companies and trying as best as possible only to retain information about insiders and 10% owners who are not funds or companies.

Note: As mentioned in the first post in this series, certain industries have their preferred metrics such as same store sales for retailers, funds from operations (FFO) for REITs and revenue per available room (RevPAR) for hotels that provide a better basis for comparison than simple valuation metrics. However metrics like Price/Earnings, Price/Sales and Enterprise Value/EBITDA included below should provide a good starting point for analyzing the majority of stocks.

Notable Insider Buys:

1. Six Flags Entertainment Corporation (SIX): $59.96

President, CEO John M. Duffey acquired 25,000 shares of this theme park operator, paying $59.93 per share for a total amount of $1.49 million. These shares were purchased indirectly through a trust.

Purchases at Six Flags usually catch my eye because of a cluster of purchases at both Six Flags and competitor Cedar Fun (FUN) in 2011 turned out to be a great signal. Both stocks went on to become multi-baggers from those levels. This purchase was unusual because we have seen nothing but sales at Six Flags since May 2013 and the stock doesn’t look inexpensive. Mr. Duffey was appointed CEO of Six Flags in February 2016.
