Insider Weekends – Akamai’s CEO Continues His Purchases

  • October 23, 2016

Welcome to edition 331 of Insider Weekends. Insider buying decreased last week with insiders buying $21.13 million of stock compared to $25.96 million in the week prior. Selling also decreased with insiders selling $424.51 million of stock last week compared to $641.89 million in the week prior.

Sell/Buy Ratio: The insider Sell/Buy ratio is calculated by dividing the total insider sales in a given week by total insider purchases that week. The adjusted ratio for last week dropped to 20.09. In other words, insiders sold more than 20 times as much stock as they purchased. The Sell/Buy ratio this week compares favorably with the prior week, when the ratio stood at 24.73. We are calculating an adjusted ratio by removing transactions by funds and companies and trying as best as possible only to retain information about insiders and 10% owners who are not funds or companies.

Note: As mentioned in the first post in this series, certain industries have their preferred metrics such as same store sales for retailers, funds from operations (FFO) for REITs and revenue per available room (RevPAR) for hotels that provide a better basis for comparison than simple valuation metrics. However metrics like Price/Earnings, Price/Sales and Enterprise Value/EBITDA included below should provide a good starting point for analyzing the majority of stocks.

Notable Insider Buys:

1. Lands’ End, Inc. (LE): $15.45

10% Owner Edward S. Lampert acquired 156,858 shares of this apparel retailer, paying $14.84 per share for a total amount of $2.33 million.

Lands’ End also topped our list last week and we wrote the following about Mr. Lampert’s purchases,

These purchases follow a cluster of small purchases by Mr. Lampert and three other directors last week. At a time when most brick-and-mortar retailers are out of favor with investors, it is perplexing to see purchases of Land’s End by its insiders and especially by Mr. Lampert.

Chief Executive Officer F. Thomson Leighton acquired 18,276 shares of this content delivery and cloud infrastructure company, paying $54.70 per share for a total amount of $999,697.  These shares were purchased indirectly through a trust.

Following a $5 million purchase in February of this year, Mr. Leighton has been on a steady diet of $1 million per month of purchases over the last 8 months. This purchase plan was probably precipitated by a big drop in the stock from October 2015 through February 2016 when the stock lost nearly half its value. While the stock is up nearly 8% from the time his purchases began, the S&P 500 is up over 11% over the same time period.
