Merger Arbitrage Mondays – July 30, 2012

Merger activity increased last week with seven new deals announced and three closing.

Deal Statistics:

New Deals:

  1. The acquisition of Peet’s Coffee & Tea (PEET) by private investment firm Joh. A. Benckiser for $1 billion or $73.50 per share in cash.
  2. The acquisition of Canadian energy company Nexen (NXY) by Chinese oil and gas company CNOOC  Ltd. (CEO) for $15.1 billion or $27.50 per share in cash. The spread on the deal is 6.55% on account of concerns that Canadian regulators might not approve the deal.
  3. The acquisition of GenOn Energy (GEN) by NRG Energy (NRG) for $1.7 billion in an all stock deal. Under the terms of the agreement, shareholders of GenOn Energy will receive 0.1216 of a share of NRG common stock in exchange for each GenOn share of common stock.
