In a week that was marred by the repercussions of tariffs announced by President Trump, the M&A landscape was silent. No new deals were announced, as companies were waiting for the dust to settle after the storm.
But the tariffs were not the only thing that Trump took action on. He created some optimism that the long-running merger of U.S. Steel with Nippon Steel could finally see its finish line, as he directed the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to conduct a second review of the proposed acquisition of U.S. Steel by Nippon Steel. A second CFIUS review is highly unusual and I don’t think I have seen that happen in the 15 years I have been tracking M&A activity. The review was intended to help determine “whether further action in this matter may be appropriate.”
