Welcome to edition 395 of Insider Weekends. Insider buying increased last week with insiders purchasing $18.16 million of stock compared to $7.58 million in the week prior. Insider buying continues to remain muted ahead of the fourth quarter earnings season. Selling decreased with insiders selling $532.15 million of stock last week compared to $647.6 million in the week prior.
Sell/Buy Ratio: The insider Sell/Buy ratio is calculated by dividing the total insider sales in a given week by total insider purchases that week. The adjusted ratio for last week dropped to 29.3. In other words, insiders sold more than 29 times as much stock as they purchased. The Sell/Buy ratio this week compares favourably with the prior week, when the ratio stood at 85.44.
Note: As mentioned in the first post in this series, certain industries have their preferred metrics such as same store sales for retailers, funds from operations (FFO) for REITs and revenue per available room (RevPAR) for hotels that provide a better basis for comparison than simple valuation metrics. However metrics like Price/Earnings, Price/Sales and Enterprise Value/EBITDA included below should provide a good starting point for analyzing the majority of stocks.

4. Dave & Buster’s Entertainment, Inc. (PLAY): $47.92
Shares of this company were acquired by 2 insiders:
Mr. Sheehan has served on the board of Dave & Buster’s since 2011 and is currently the CEO of Scientific Games (SGMS). He was previously the CFO and then the CEO of Norwegian Cruise Lines Holdings (NCLH), a company I wrote about in 2016 following insider purchases at Norwegian.
Mr. Griffith has also served on the board of Dave & Buster’s since 2011 and was previously the Vice Chairman of Activision Blizzard (ATVI).
These purchases followed a sharp 22% decline in Dave & Buster’s last week when the company released weak guidance for fiscal 2017. A 22% drop in the stock for a projected 1% drop in same store sales seemed excessive and the stock briefly traded for less than 8 times EBITDA before rebounding in the second half of the week. I have had PLAY in my watchlist for some time now and decided to start a position in the company after this decline and the show of confidence by insiders who have been on the board for over 6 years.
