Welcome to edition 374 of Insider Weekends. Insider buying almost doubled with insiders purchasing $169.18 million of stock compared to $85.56 million in the week prior. Selling on the other hand declined with insiders selling $2.69 billion of stock last week compared to $3.27 billion in the week prior.
Sell/Buy Ratio: The insider Sell/Buy ratio is calculated by dividing the total insider sales in a given week by total insider purchases that week. The adjusted ratio for last week dropped to 15.88. In other words, insiders sold almost 16 times as much stock as they purchased. The Sell/Buy ratio this week compares favorably with the prior week, when the ratio stood at 38.16.
Note: As mentioned in the first post in this series, certain industries have their preferred metrics such as same store sales for retailers, funds from operations (FFO) for REITs and revenue per available room (RevPAR) for hotels that provide a better basis for comparison than simple valuation metrics. However metrics like Price/Earnings, Price/Sales and Enterprise Value/EBITDA included below should provide a good starting point for analyzing the majority of stocks.
Notable Insider Buys:
1. Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. (ETP): $18.26
Chief Executive Officer Kelcy L. Warren acquired 1,000,000 shares of this energy storage and transportation company, paying $18.65 per share for a total amount of $18.65 million. Mr. Warren increased his stake by 96.93% to 2,031,646 shares with this purchase.
Energy Transfer Partners, the company behind the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline, merged with Sonoco Logistics Partners last year to become the second largest energy pipeline company. ETP is structured as a Master Limited Partnership (MLP) and hence distributes most of its income to unit holders. As is the case with most MLPs, it has a high double digit yield of over 12% and you are likely to get a K-1 form to file with your taxes even if you hold the MLP in a retirement account. Some brokers like Interactive Brokers (IBKR) no longer allow you to hold MLPs in retirement accounts. ThinkAdvisor has a great FAQ related to MLPs and their tax consequences.

5. Fiesta Restaurant Group, Inc. (FRGI): $17.8
Shares of this restaurants chain were acquired by 3 insiders:
Fiesta Restaurant Group made our list for the second week in a row with the CEO joining Leucadia in buying shares. We wrote the following last week,
This purchase by Leucadia is less than half the size of their $6.53 million purchase in June. The stock was down more than 20% from their June purchase price before rebounding last week following the company’s second quarter 2017 results. The company is still attempting to turn around and while turn arounds rarely manage to turn around, Mr. Friedman probably believes otherwise.
